Darius

This is a disambiguation page. The name Darius appears in several books of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. This site treats the references in two text-driven profiles: (1) an imperial “King of Persia” profile (Ezra/prophets/Nehemiah), and (2) the Daniel-only figure known as “Darius the Mede.”

1. Darius — King of Persia

Authority profile: imperial Persian administration (decrees, archives, regnal dating).

Modern chronological correlation: commonly identified with Darius I (c. 522–486 BC).

This is the Darius found in Ezra 5-6, Nehemiah 12, Haggai 1, and in Zechariah 1 and 7

2. Darius the Mede

Authority attested: at the fall of Babylon (Daniel 5–6).

Modern chronological correlation: commonly dated to c. 539 BC.

Mentioned exclusively in Daniel. The historical identification of this figure is disputed; see the dedicated page for the case file.
