This article is about Zechariah, King of Israel and son of Jeroboam II (c. 753–752 BC). For other men named Zechariah in Scripture, see the Zechariah disambiguation page.
Zechariah son of Jeroboam was a king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He succeeded his father Jeroboam II and reigned in Samaria for six months. The biblical record reports that he did evil in the sight of the LORD, following the practices of his predecessors, and that he was assassinated by Shallum son of Jabesh. His death is explicitly identified as the fulfillment of the LORD’s word to Jehu that his sons would sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation, marking the end of Jehu’s dynasty. Scripture provides no additional biographical or genealogical detail beyond this account.
These appear to be the complete biblical references to this specific Zechariah. His reign was the shortest of any king in the biblical record at just six months, ending the dynasty of Jehu.
